WEARING MAKEUP AS AN ASPIRING MAKEUP ARTIST

So as you can probably guess from this blog I am an aspiring Makeup Artist.

Something I think about quite a lot is how often I am actually wearing and experimenting with makeup. I am a naturally lazy person so I don't like to take time out of my day to do extra things every day, so most days I go to work sans makeup. And the days that I do bother to put makeup on are special occasions at work, if we have a dress up day if I know that the big boss is coming in etc.

But recently I've been thinking a lot about the fact that I don't wear makeup a lot. I wonder if people take me seriously when I tell them that this is what I want to do, or do they think I'm just another white girl with dreams of being Instagram famous? I really don't want people to think of me this way, because this is a pretty serious thing for me.

Another thing that has been kind of bothering me lately is how I don't experiment with a lot of makeup. I've pretty much stuck to the same things for the past couple of years. I want to take more steps outside my comfort zone. I've sort of started by buying my first lipgloss in about 8 years. Which makes me nervous, because I haven't worn lipgloss in so long I'm scared, but I want to love it so bad, so that it will make me want to step even further outside of my comfort zone!

I think that small steps are the best way to go right now. Maybe if I start to get into the habit of doing my brows everyday or putting on mascara, eventually I'll want to go that extra step and do some crazy eyeshadow just to run down to the shops for some milk! I think that taking this step into becoming comfortable with putting on makeup every day will also help me to feel a bit more comfortable, in my body as a whole. Because when I do take that time out of my day to glam myself up, I feel about 100x more confident, my posture gets better, and I just have a brighter outlook on life (most days, there are days when I know that I will feel more comfortable without makeup on, but that is a blog post for another day)

SFX GONE WRONG

So as many of you know I love to do special effects makeup, but alas I have had no formal training and everything that I have learnt has been from YouTube tutorials and pictures on the internet
Because of this my learning process is hard and slow and things go wrong more often than not.

Take my latest "creation" for example. I did this look using Gelatin, but unfortunately due to me rushing through the making of the Gelatin the mixture came out super runny and would not set into something that I could work with.

Not wanting to give up, i made some prosthetics using clay and the Gelatin and let them set thinking it would solve every thing. Then I ran into a second problem. I wanted to use spirit gum to initially glue the pieces down before I built up around them. But the glue was not having a bar of it. it basically just dried up and slipped right off the back of the prosthetics not going tacky at all (and to add salt to the wound I dropped my bottle of spirit gum after this wasting most of it and ruining my floor)

So I gave up on the spirit gum and realised that the pieces would hold on enough until I could build up around them.

I began to build up slowly with the liquid Gelatin I had on me, and everything was running smoothly until I ran into yet another problem. The Gelatin in the prosthetics was cold because I had, had it in the freezer whilst the liquid was at room temperature by this point. So the liquid was melting away at the prosthetic pieces.

Again not wanting to give up because i had a ton of Gelatin left I kept building up what I could silently screaming every time something went wrong. Eventually I got to a point where I could start painting. And even though the paint fixed it a little bit, I still pretty much hated it, but it's all part of the learning experience so I posted it anyway (heavily edited of course)

The only good things in this look in my opinion was the palm of my hand which was done with a super thin layer of Gelatin picked apart and irritated to look like burnt skin, but you can barely see it in the photo and that makes me sad.

Anyway, just wanted to make this post to say that we can all learn from our mistakes. I learnt a whole lot about Gelatin and spirit gum that I can know and avoid for next time!

SFX makeup- First time using Liquid Latex

So the other day I went to the Kryolan store in Newmarket and bought my first real special effects makeup! The liquid latex was what caught my eye the most so I decided to use it as soon as I got home! And this is what I came up with!

Now this was my first ever time using liquid latex so I ran into a bit of trouble. I applied the layers with a barrier of one ply of tissue in between to create texture, but when it came time to cut it open, it would not budge and I ended up ripping the whole thing off! I was absolutely devastated and almost gave up right then and there.

But then and idea struck me, so i cut the entire thing in half and stuck both parts down again, but noooooo there was a huge gap at the bottom, hence the fleshy looking part at the bottom which was done using ripped up cotton pads.

Then it got time to paint it and this was honestly the most fun part, I played around with heaps of colurs and textures to get the perfect blood splatter and to achieve the desired depth of the inside of the cut. That was done by mixing blacks and reds also with some blood gel to create the illusion that the cut ran very deep.

I used a mix of blood gels face paints and grease paints to make everything look as gory as possible, finishing it off with a touch of blood spray and blotting it with a makeup wipe to make it look as though someone had tried to clean all the blood from around the wound.

And there we go, first time using Liquid Latex I believe was a great success! I also got some moulding wax so stay tuned to see if/what I post using that!

CHRISTMASSSS

CHRISTMAS! My second favourite time of year just behind Halloween!

I set up my christmas tree and some lights in my room (alongside all my other fairy lights)

But something that makes me a little bit upset is no matter how hard little old New Zealand tries we are never gonna be as christmassy as I would like, but I will try and I will be christmas af until I'm told not too anymore

I'm all for Christmas but if you are selling christmas stuff in OCTOBER I will complain, can we leave Christmas until December once in our lives please?

Still need to do my present shopping oops, got a couple but I need to buy for my parents and my mum is literally the HARDEST person to buy for because what do you buy a person who has everything they need right?

That's all from me today, I'm gonna go and try out some christmassy recipes to make me feel extra festive xxxxx

It's Halloween!

Yay my favourite time of year is upon us!

But unfortunately halloween isn't much of a thing in NZ :( so this look that I have done here isn't actually going to be leaving the house which is sad, but I am keeping it on just incase we get any trick or treaters :)

I thought I'd post some pics of the look and what I used to create it!!!!

This is the whole look by itself, It's kinda mental patient/dead person inspired by Shaanxo on youtube!
okay so this first shot is everything that I used in one picture (obviously) not that much to get where I got!

So the first thing I used was a kind of off white concealor all over my face with a stippling brush, just to make myself look a bit more dead and pale than I already did haha

Then I went in with this eyeshadow which is an Art Deco one in the shade 311, and I lined this under my eyes with a small eyeshadow brush, i also used this as a contour, i used a setting brush just to make myself look gaunt and sick, and also around my nose and lips

Then with a blending brush I went in over the top with this red colour, I don't actually know the brand of this eyeshadow, We've had the palette it came in for years, I also ran this over the top of my lid a little. I also ran this over my lips before I applied the sewn look to make them look inflamed
Then with that same blending brush I ran the darker of these two colours which are the revlon Plum Amaranth palette (I'm not even sure if they sell this anymore I've had it for so long), and ran it over the top of my eyelid a bit, then I grabbed a crease brush and ran this through the crease and sort of down the nose a little
I used the Art Deco white eyeliner pencil in my waterline, don't really know why just thought it looked cool :)

Then I used the MIKI black eyeliner pencil too apply the black lines to my mouth for the sewn up look

Then I wrapped a bandage around my head and sprayed some of this $2 blood spray all over it (which got it all over everything else, even my poor laptop). Then with the cotton pad that is in my bandage, I sprayed some of it on there and dabbed it all over my neck and face (which is very hard, the spray just absorbed onto the cotton.
Then with a lip brush I applied little dots around the black lines on my mouth to make it really look like stitching in my mouth, and when it dried it looked like dried blood which was awesome!

Then I applied some mascara just to pull it all together, this is the Maybelline New York, The Colossal Volum' Express and it specialises in smoky eyes which I obviously haven't gone for today!

Last, but certainly not least brushes!

left to right:
Real Techniques Stippling Brush
Real Techniques Setting Brush
Mac 217 Blending Brush
Revlon? Crease Brush
Standard Small Eyeshadow Brush
(also a lip brush but I forgot to put it in the photo)
